The Mk II "Talker" helmet was developed in 1942 for naval personnel and allowed communication headsets to be worn comfortably under the helmet.
It was a very large and somewhat cumbersome helmet, but it served its purpose very well. It was designed to allow headphones to be worn by radio operators or anyone using shipboard noise-powered telephones.
The Mk-II was manufactured by the McCord Radiator Company in Detroit, Michigan; the "Arsenal of Democracy". Its composition consisted of non-magnetic Hadfield manganese steel.
In addition to holding headphones, it also provided a high level of protection for the wearer. The shell is so wide that it even protected part of the shoulders of the sailor standing beneath it.
Here painted in olive color, which suggests a later post-war use in the Korean / Vietnam War.
