These covers were used to protect the slide-out sight – when not in use – from dirt and damage during tough frontline operations, and also to prevent glare in the sight when the weapon was fired whilst hot. A sniper rarely needs to use the open sights, but should this nevertheless be necessary, the sliding sight is opened and the leather cap is folded down. Approximately 25 hours’ work +/- The cocking lever is movable and pulls back the simulated ‘bolt’. However, the bolt does not lock in the rear position. The cocking handle can be unscrewed for transport. The model weighs approx. 31 kg including the barrel. The single-shot and automatic fire selector is movable. The barrel is solid and the muzzle opening is indicated by a bore; the barrel can be removed, just like on the original, and is detachable, making it easy to transport in sections.
