This weapon was originally used by the US Army. Within a few years, however, most American citizens had one of these revolvers. The fact that the Colt used the same caliber ammunition as the Winchester M1873 rifle contributed to the Colt's popularity as a handgun in the old North American West in the late nineteenth century.Curiously, this revolver has been given numerous nicknames. In addition to the aforementioned Peacemaker, it was also known as the Frontier or Widowmaker, in reference to the ease of this revolver and leaving widows among the women of the time.In the westerns of the 1940s and 1950s, the film industry mythologized the "Peacemaker" and he was associated with screen stars such as John Wayne and Gary Cooper. Roosevelt also had a Colt engraved with his initials and George S. Patton used two.
