German National Prize for Art and Science
History:After the Nobel Prize Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on June 25, 1936 to Carl von Ossietzky, who had been sentenced to 1½ years in prison for treason by the Reich Court in November 1931 (Hindenburg rejected a plea for clemency), the German side responded by creating the German National Prize for Art and Science on January 30, 1937 by decree of the Führer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler.
The foundation charter stated:
"In order to prevent shameful occurrences for all future generations, I decree the foundation of a German National Prize for Art and Science as of today. This national prize will be awarded annually to three deserving Germans in the amount of 100,000 Reichsmark each. The acceptance of the Nobel Prize is thus prohibited for all future Germans".
In addition to the sum of money, the award consisted of the Order's sash, a breast star made of platinum and set with diamonds, as well as an elaborate award certificate in a leather portfolio made by Frieda Thiersch. The decorations were presented in a magnificent casket.
In total, only 9 national prizes were awarded in 1937 and 1938, namely to:
Prof. Ludwig TroostReichsleiter Alfred RosenbergProf. Dr. August Bier and Prof.'Dr. Ferdinand Sauerbruch (half each) Prof. Dr. Wilhelm FilchnerDr. Ing. Fritz TodtProf. Dr. Ferdinand Porsche Prof. Dr. Ernst Heinkel and Prof. Dr. Willy Messerschmitt (half each)
The first award ceremony for Troost, Rosenberg, Bier and Sauerbruch (half each) and Filchner took place on September 7, 1937. Adolf Hitler presented the decorations on January 30, 1938 in the Reich Chancellery in Berlin.
The second award ceremony for Todt, Porsche, Heinkel and Messerschmidt (half each) took place on September 6, 1938 (the decorations were awarded on January 30, 1939).
The German National Prize for Art and Science is one of the rarest awards of the 3rd Reich.
